Pigment and Melasma

Pigment and Melasma

Years of sun exposure can cause skin to develop unwanted pigmentation. Also known as melasma, these brown of dark spots can appear anywhere on the body, but are most often found on the face or chest. Patients suffering from this concern tend to feel uncomfortable and self-conscious about the appearance of their skin. Unfortunately, once these brown patches appear, they tend to stay for years or even a lifetime unless medically treated.

What causes skin discoloration?

Both men and women can have skin pigment concerns. However, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, women are more likely than men to get melasma. While sun exposure is a major cause, hormones can also play a role. In fact, melasma is often seen in pregnant women and has even sometimes been called “the mask of pregnancy.”

Aside from gender, the likelihood of someone developing melasma increases with darker skin types or if a blood relative also has it.

The main causes are:

  • Ultraviolet (UV) light exposure
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal changes
  • Irritating skincare products
