Sebaceous Hyperplasia

Sebaceous Hyperplasia

What is sebaceous hyperplasia?

Sebaceous hyperplasia is a benign condition in which the sabaceous glands (the glands that lubricate and waterproof our skin and hair) become enlarged around tiny hair follicles of the facial skin. This disorder usually produces yellowish or flesh-colored bumps on the face, and will generally affect newborns and middle-aged to elderly people.

This condition is usually inherited, and contrary to popular belief, is not caused by oily skin or infections.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include 1-5mm papules (elevated skin with no visible fluid) on the forehead, nose, and cheeks. These papules can sometimes be cauliflower-shaped.
